# General Settings

> Set the device hostname, and the system time, time zone and NTP server

## Overview

General Settings is where you change what this ARX is called on the network, and everything to do with the system clock.

The two situations that bring people here:

- You want a hostname that's easier to recognise
- The timestamps in the system log, on scheduled jobs or in notifications are wrong, so the time zone or NTP needs fixing

## Hostname

The hostname is the device's name on the network. Use something recognisable that fits your company's naming convention, such as `ARX-FINANCE-01` or `ARX-RD-LAB`.

<warning>

Changing the hostname restarts services and takes 10 to 15 minutes, during which the device may be unreachable. Don't power it off while that runs.

</warning>

## Time

Set the system time, the time zone and the NTP server (`time.cloudflare.com`, `pool.ntp.org`, or one of your own). **Test Connection** checks the server before you save.

If your company runs an internal NTP server, use the one IT specifies; otherwise use a public server the system supports.

The clock matters for logs, schedules, backups and notifications alike.
