# Backup and Restore

> Configure backup storage locations over S3, NFS or SMB, schedule backups, and restore system configuration and applications

## Overview

Backup and Restore creates restore points for the ARX system configuration and the applications on it.

Once an ARX is in production use, set up a regular backup. When you need to replace the device or redeploy, you can recover the environment from an existing backup instead of configuring it all again.

**Set the backup location → set the schedule → restore points build automatically → restore onto a compatible device when you need to**

## Backup locations

Where backups are written, over **S3**, **NFS** or **SMB**. Pick a reliable location your company already runs; each location's connection is monitored, so confirm it reads as healthy after you set it up.

## Schedules and retention

Set daily or weekly automatic backups with a retention policy that suits you.

The first backup is a full one and later backups only transfer what changed, but every backup is a complete restore point on its own — restoring never depends on an earlier backup.

## Checking the backup history

History shows past backup times and their status. After you set it up the first time, confirm at least one backup succeeded.

## What to know before restoring

<caution>

**A restore only runs onto a new device:**

A backup can't be restored onto the device it was taken from — the target has to be a separate, new device. So if you need to be able to recover, get two devices and back up across them: one in service, one to restore onto.

</caution>

<caution>

**A restore only works between matching versions:**

A backup can only be restored onto a device running the same ARX version it was taken from. If you keep a standby device to restore onto, update it whenever you update the main device.
